#08 Recoverworld Hour with DJ John Askew – Release your inner dark!

The latest episode of Recoverworld Hour on Diesel FM is now available to listen to on Tony Vertigo’s “Beyond Sunrise” Mixcloud page.

DJ John Askew is to trance what Aunt Bessie is to Yorkshires – in as much as you can not talk about one, without thinking of the other.

As head of A & R, he was an integral part of the Discover Records label for many years, and his influences can still be heard to this day, as the label stays true to it’s ethos of only releasing quality underground banging floor fillers.

In his interview, Johns discusses who he wants to punch, who he would most want to enjoy a tipple or two with and why he got his kit off in the name of charity!

This mix itself, is outstanding. Suitably dark, heavily psy influenced and relentless from start to finish.

Catch him next week (Friday 13th February, 2015) in Brighton, as he returns to his spiritual home and headlines Discover Records newly renamed “Discover Trance Academy presents ACID REVOLUTION.

#07 Colour & Pitch set to release Single Number Five

C&P_SessionsOctoberColour & Pitch is a label brimming with talent. Label owner Will Sumsuch heads up the unit and not only does he know how to write and lay down quality tunes himself, with tracks like Live Now bearing testament to this, he can also spot a cracker a mile off!

Enter Barcelona based DJ and producer Teysel, who takes centre stage for C&P’s 5th release. Inspired by underground Chicago and West Coast US house music, Teysel’s traditional, precise approach to DJing is reflected in his compositions. With an EP and several remixes released on German label EUN, he is now truly finding his feet as a producer.

Title track ‘Continuous’ represents a slice of simple, Berlin influenced, stripped down tech house, full of dark and brooding atmospheres.

Ahead of their forthcoming début single on Colour and Pitch, Spanish production duo Aiby & The Noise make their entrance with a truly raucous remix of ‘Continuous’. Replaying the bass-line and adding some classic breaks, they transform the track into a growling behemoth; to be handled with caution!

Hailing from Czech Republic, residing in Brighton UK, A-Bee & Tom Vagabondo have released on countless labels both separately and together as The Lazyboys. Their remix of Continuous completes our package with a deep and mournful deep house journey, adding haunting spoken word and bleak, atmospheric synths.

#06 Let’s Get Lostly – The New Face of Trance!

lostlyIt’s been a busy few months for Militant Artists South African Super Star Andre Frauenstein aka Lostly and it’s just about to get busier! With the pending release of his genre hopping debut artist album NO DIRECTION HOME (released early 2015) this musical masterpiece is a personal journey, which proves beyond doubt the incredible versatility this artist has to offer. Containing 10 massive dance floor fillers and with early support from the likes of Aly and Fila, John O Callaghan, Brian Kearney, Indecent Noise and Manuel Le Saux it looks set to catapult him to new heights!

As head of A & R for the hugely successful trance label Discover Records, Lostly will be making his UK debut on February 13th 2015, in the labels hometown Brighton, for the official album launch party. Included on the line up is previous head of A & R, John Askew and current head of A & R for Discover Dark – Oberon, making this a truly label orientated launch. Signed copies of the CD will be available on the night, in advance of the full release date.

The title track No Direction Home will be released as a single, towards the end of January 2015 with remixes from Thomas Datt and Gary Maguire, while Take this Acid will follow as the second single shortly after.

And it doesn’t stop there! Look out for two high profile remixes over the coming months, with both Armada Records releasing his remix of the trance classic, Signum “What Ya Got 4 Me” and Blackhole Recording releasing his remix of the new Senadee single “Robot Love”.

His recent invitation to play at one of the World renowned “#AbsolutNights” events in his home town of Johannesburg and his latest starring role in feature length movie “Treurgrond” directed by Academy Award Nominee Darrell Roodt, looks to further cement Lostly’s reputation as an all round performer and one of the industry’s most likeable and hardworking characters!

#05 Kinetica – Amazonia Out 29th September on Discover White Label

DISCWL63Recoverworld Label Group are happy to announce the debut of Kinetica on Discover White Label. Since we heard his remix of Allen & Envy vs. S.W.A.P.’s ‘Nemesis’ on Discover Dark – we knew that we had to snag an original track from him for our White Label offshoot.

‘Amazonia’ exceeds our expectations; it’s tribal, euphoric and absolutely huge where it needs to be!

On the remix is O.B.M. Notion, whose version of the track extends the peaceful nature of the original, adding in additional emphasis where you might not expect it.

#04 Guru Josh – My Burning Bush – Will this last for Infinity?

big_guru_eventToday is the day! The legend that is Guru Josh is back with a vengeance, with this latest offering entitled “MY BURNING BUSH” and true to style, Mr Josh has well and truly stepped out of the proverbial box to bring us something that is original and will stick in your mind for a long time once you have listened to it.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I am a child of the rave generation, cutting my teeth at a very early age on happy hardcore nights, KLF and field parties, I remember all three outings of the hugely popular dance track Infinity 1990 (which remains my favourite version to this day) Infinity 2008 and Infinity 2012 with the wonderful use of the signature saxophone, which is synonymous with this iconic tune. There was a time in the late naughties that you couldn’t turn on the radio, TV, step into a bar or a club, or buy a commercial dance compilation without hearing it. So it isn’t surprising that it has notched up 1.4 BILLION YouTube hits and 12 million in official sales, making it the biggest selling dance tune in history.

Can history repeat itself? Well lets break things down a bit. Firstly, and this bit to me is a stroke of genius, Josh has very cleverly enlisted the help of a Hollywood A Lister – and I don’t make that statement lightly. With a voice like “God” himself (In Tinsel Town and in my eyes – its as close as it gets) reeling off  a re-written “modernized” version of the Ezekiel 25:17 monologue as made famous by Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction – was in itself a smart move. If you don’t know what i mean this will jog your memory. The original chapter read “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.” – now you remember I know you do!

And then just when you think you know where this track is going – this sweet gentle “God like” human being drops the line “BEELZEBUB IS COMING TO F**K YOU UP”

Now depending on your tastes and preferences, you have a bounty of options, all high tempo, catchy and with a twist – The original three mixes (Edit, Extended Radio Edit and EDM Mix) are being released on Lose It Records, exclusively on Beatport today (July 28th). For me however, I am looking forward to the remix package which comes to us in the coming weeks. A plethora of talent has stepped up to endorse the track and give us their own take including  Stereojackers Vs Mark Loverush, Wickaman, Super Stylers, Andrew Carra,  Electronic Youth and David Noakes – the last two of which are my stand out favourites.

So back to my question – can history repeat itself? Who can say. With the direction dance music has taken, the many different ways music can now be listened to, downloaded (legally or illegally) and streamed. It’s not for me to decide. Its down to the people! And trust me every WILL have an opinion on this. For sure, its Marmite. For me, I’m just glad Josh is back with his unique style and take on life. Welcome back GJ – its great to see you!

#03 The Muzik Genie – Gary Maguire is back- iNSIDE

GaryMaguirepic_400x400This week I was privileged to be assigned with the task of promoting Irish trance legend, Gary Maguires debut artist album – iNSIDE, which is being released on Recoverworld next month. Being what I would consider to be a trance connoisseur, I was intrigued to see what a purist trance producer, could conjure up, and I was over overwhelmed with the quality and attention to detail that was presented to me.

Anyone who can trace their trance routes back to the early naughties – way before the term “EDM” ever existed, will know what I mean when I describe this album as a personal journey. It felt like I was listening to one of my favourite CD’s of all time – Gatecrasher Wet, and that is the biggest compliment I can bestow on this beautifully crafted work of art.

Opening with “Dont Believe The Hype” I was immediately faced with Gary’s dark signature undertones, combined with an uplifting edge and beautiful bass line. “Can’t You Hear Us” brought back memories of trance classic “Turn It Around – 4 Strings Feat. Vanessa van Hemert” whilst “Anonymous” introduced one of Gary’s talented siblings to enhance a melodious but vitally important respite to the tempo. “Its Complicated” was anything but – and quickly reminded me that I was on a journey of discovery and subtly drifted into “Playing Games”, which once again drew comparisons from the classic era of uplifting anthems, which defined many a memorable night out. “Rewinding Time” is guaranteed to grace many a set in clubland and can only be described as an epic trance classic. “Cangaru” featuring Anthony Quinn, gives you an ever so slight breather from the high energy workout, but respite is short lived as “By My Side” featuring Lisa Abbott catapults you in the next phase of the album and reminds you once again, that this is no ordinary production. Lisa’s vocals offset the angst that give us an insight as to the truth behind the album. Track nine – “Beer Goggles” combines originality, pace and imagination, leading in to “Make Believe” – which tracks back to a much darker and heavier vibe altogether. “Press Play” and “Clear Purpose” complete the story, and again take me back to my Gatecrasher days.

The finale is the title track iNSIDE, and draws together the family. Featuring “the Bro and Sis” it is by far my favourite tune. It stopped me in my tracks, having already lived every moment. The stunning vocal, piano riffs and sheer emotion left me in no doubt that, if I was in a club and this was dropped in a set, I would have “a moment” that I thought had been left in the hedonistic days of some of my most memorable nights in some of the best clubs around the World.

It saddens me that these days days talent is judged by Facebook “likes” and Twitter “followers”, hence the reason that many of todays DJ’s are in the popularity polls. Gary is a reminder and a testament to the reason why us purists still believe and still understand what it is like to stand in the middle of the dance floor and feel emotion.

Released on CD on the 16th June and the 30th June on digital format, this is not one to be be missed.

#02 The Muzik Genie – Time to Recover -World

Recoverworld2012Exciting news this week at The Muzik Genie HQ, as I celebrate my first “official” PR role, working with dance music royalty – The Recoverworld Label Group. Being able to support Brighton heritage is reward enough you would think. They are able to boast that they are one of the UK’s oldest independent dance music label groups – starting back in 1994 as Eve Records.

But the icing on the cake for me, is that it is predominantly a trance label – which is still my true love, although, admittedly these days I regularly flirt with other genres. My love affair with trance, started back in the mid nineties, as I progressed from raving at happy hardcore nights, at venues such as the notorious Rhythm Station in Aldershot and all nighters like World Dance at Lydd Airport. I was given a cassette tape (don’t ask kids) of a Paul Oakenfold Mix and it never left my walkman (again, don’t ask kids) well – until my radio cassette player chewed it up and spat it out, never to be heard again!

Recoverworld currently boasts of  a suite of eight active labels, generating a high output of releases across a wide range of genres including trance, techno and house. The labels currently include the “Discover” labels, Kill the Lights, EVE, Flux Delux, Recover, Slinky (management), Iconise and Prosumer although this list is continually changing as we expand our roster to include more genres, artists and labels.

Past and present artists  include Matt Hardwick (who to this day played one of the most memorable sets for me, at Gatecrasher in 1999), John Askew, Manuel Le Saux, Sean Tyas, John O’Callaghan, Gary Maguire, Activa and many more. And they come from all over the World – The Netherlands, Australia, USA, Ireland and Russia giving a truly international flavour.

Recoverworld continues to evolve. As well as a continually expanding their collection of record labels, they can also include a publishing company, online record store and recording studio/mastering suite in the tool bag. Their music is licensed to CD’s and DVD’s internationally and includes large scale compilations via labels including Armada, Ministry, Sony, Vandit and Warner Music as well as numerous credible underground mixes.

I dont know what the future holds, but I do know one thing …. Recoverworld go from strength to strength and I am now a very proud person to be a small part of that journey.
